Already known as a prodigious writer of pop hooks, Dane County native Skylar Grey can now add something else to her résumé: an appearance on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah.
Grey was a guest on the long-running talk and news satire show earlier this week. The 32-year-old performed a medley of some of her best-known hits, and she also chatted with Noah about her eclectic career — from broke folk singer to, according to Noah, hip-hop “Disney princess.” For those who want to know the real Slim Shady, Grey also talked a bit about her frequent collaborator Eminem.
Even if you haven’t heard of Grey at this point, chances are you’ve heard her. She’s lent her voice to some of the biggest songs on the planet, including Eminem and Rihanna’s “Love the Way You Lie,” Nicki Minaj’s “Bed of Lies” and Macklemore’s “Glorious.” She also won the coveted “Ringtone of the Year” trophy at the 2006 MTV Music Video Awards for her work on “Where’d You Go,” a tune by the short-lived Linkin Park side project Fort Minor. It was the only year the award was given out. Born Holly Brook Hafermann in Mazomanie (population 1,699), Grey has been performing music since she was a child, initially in a folk duo with her mother. She moved to L.A. at 17 and soon found herself writing songs for future Oscar-winning actress Brie Larson, on Larson’s only album, Finally Out of P.E. She changed her name to Skylar Grey in 2010 and has since released two albums under that moniker (her 2006 debut, Like Blood Like Honey, was released as Holly Brook).Grey’s latest single is a cover of Ben E. King’s standard “Stand By Me,” which she recorded for a 2018 Budweiser Super Bowl commercial.
